Myth: “Diabetes only affects older people, so it’s not a concern at our workplace.”
Fact: This is far from true. 7 in 10 adults with diabetes are of working age – meaning a large portion of the global workforce lives with diabetes. Every office, including Safaricom, likely has employees (or their family members) managing diabetes. It’s absolutely a workplace concern, not just an old-age issue.
Myth: “Employees with diabetes can’t be as productive or handle demanding jobs.”
Fact: With proper support, people with diabetes can thrive in any role. Diabetes management is entirely compatible with a full, active work life. While challenges such as fatigue or glucose swings may arise, these can be managed if the workplace is understanding. The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) encourages inclusive workplaces where employees with diabetes feel supported and can manage their condition without fear. In practice, this means allowing discreet blood sugar checks, insulin breaks, or flexible schedules when needed. When employees feel safe to manage their health, their productivity and morale remain high.
